Mr Melhem: My adjournment is directed to the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council and the Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Regional Development and Minister for Resources, the Honourable Jaclyn Symes, MP.

Under Victoria’s existing laws, anyone who picks up a stray cat or dog must provide it to their local council, or to a person or business that has a specific agreement with a council—known as an 84Y agreement—to accept lost pets. They can’t just call the owner. But our government has promised to improve this.

I ask that the minister consider what additional reporting requirements by vet clinics and registered animal shelters may be required; so that animals can be directly reunited with their owner by any clinic or animal shelter, without compromising public safety.
