Mr MELHEM (Western Metropolitan) — I want to join Mr Barber in commemorating the 50-year anniversary of Australia giving Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of our land, the right to vote. This is a very important milestone. Unfortunately, when our constitution was drafted in the early 1900s the view at the time was that the Aboriginal people would be a dying race and this was something we did not need to worry about going forward. The 1967 referendum was a great milestone, and I am hopeful, with goodwill from various parties on both sides of politics, that we can go to the next step and give further recognition to Aboriginal people in this country and make sure we give them the status they deserve.
