WESTERN ROADS UPGRADE

The Andrews Labor Government has invested $1.8 billion for a comprehensive program of road upgrades and maintenance in the west, to cater for Melbourne’s rapid growth.

The Western Roads Upgrade will transform eight priority roads in Melbourne’s western suburbs including:

Dunnings Road and Palmers Road, Point Cook

We’re making it easier for you to get to and from the Princess Freeway.

  • Adding an extra traffic lane in each direction as well as a dedicated bus lane in each direction from Wallace Avenue to Dunnings Road
  • Widening Skeleton Creek bridge
  • Upgrading ten intersections
  • Building walking and cycling paths

Palmers Road and Robinsons Road, Truganina

We’re making it easier for you to travel north and south between the Western and Princes freeways.

  • Adding one extra lane in each direction between Princes Freeway and Boundary Road and two extra lanes between Boundary Road and the Western Freeway
  • Upgrading 16 intersections
  • Building new walking and cycling paths and a new overpass for the Federation Trail over Sayers Road and Palmers Road
  • Straightening out Palmers Road at the Sayers Road intersections
  • Introducing bus priority lanes at intersections

Derrimut Road, Tarneit

We’re making it easier for you to get to Tarneit train station and shops by improving Derrimut Road.

  • Adding one extra lane in each direction
  • Widening the bridge over the train line
  • Upgrading nine intersections
  • Building new walking and cycling paths
  • Adding landscaping by planting new trees and shrubs

  • Adding an extra lane in each direction
  • Widening Skeleton Creek bridge and Laverton Creek bridge
  • Upgrading 18 intersections

  • Creating a new overpass for the Federation Trail

Dohertys Road, Fitzgerald Road to Grieve Parade, Laverton North and Laverton

We’re improving Dohertys Road in Laverton North to access key freight routes and industrial areas.

  • Adding an extra lane in each direction
  • Increasing road capacity and improving traffic flow by building a second bridge over the Princes Freeway
  • Upgrading five intersections
  • Building an overpass for the Federation Trail
  • Adding new walking and cycling paths

Forsyth Road Interchange, Hoppers Crossing 

We’re upgrading the Forsyth Road interchange to improve access to the Princes Freeway.

  • Adding an extra lane in each direction
  • Straightening Forsyth Road and Old Geelong Road to connect to Ashcroft Avenue
  • Replacing the roundabout at Ashcroft Avenue with traffic lights
  • Widening the bridges over the Princes Freeway and the train line
  • Building new walking and cycling paths

Duncans Road Interchange, Werribee and Werribee South 

We’re improving access to the freeway and popular tourist attractions in Werribee.

  • Building new exit ramps from the Princes Freeway to Duncans Road
  • Building two new bridges over the Princes Freeway, providing two lanes in each direction
  • Adding two new ramps for the Princes Freeway at Duncans Road with an entrance for Geelong-bound traffic and an exit for traffic coming from Geelong
  • Improving the intersection of K Road and Duncans Road
  • Building new walking and cycling paths along Duncans Road and safe crossing areas

Managing the Environment 

To complete the Western Roads Upgrade, some trees will need to be removed to make space to build new lanes and walking paths. We understand the importance of the environment and work hard to minimise tree removal where possible.
